May I Have Your Leftovers Cowl #5

Oh, what do you do with your leftovers? Oh, what do you do with your leftovers? Oh, what do you do with your leftovers? May I have them please? (Sung to the tune of Oh What do you do in the Summertime.)

My knitting friends know that I love to take their leftover sock yarn from them. I use that leftover yarn in lots of different projects. I’ve used it to make sweaters; hats; dreaming up new projects; and not the least of these, cowls. So far, I have finished four and am working on the fifth one.

The first cowl (Ravelry) I knit, I cast on 71 stitches provisionally and knit every other stitch with white. The contrast colors were changed whenever I got tired of that yarn or I used it completely up. It was fun and addictive, thus there are now almost five of them.

First MIHYL Cowl

The cast-on quantity has changed over the process, but the length has always stayed 50″. I went from 71 stitches on that first cowl on a size 3.25mm needle to now casting on 91 stitches on a 3.5mm knitting needle. I am now changing the yarn every ten rows which makes the knitting seem to fly. “What? How can I already be at ten rows?” Before you know it, you’ve knit ten inches. It goes so quickly.

I am now tempted to cast on a V-neck sweater in one-by-one colorwork. I just need to finish a few other projects before I can start that.

What other projects you say? Well, I have a Basic Organic Cotton Tee (Ravelry) that just needs one-and-a-half sleeves; a helical knit V-neck sweater that is also missing one-and-a-half sleeves; a half finished sock which is missing a mate; a Jelly Roll Blanket (Ravelry) that is also using leftover sock yarn; another sock that lives at work for conference call knitting; a little shawlette which is the car knitting; and many other projects that are hiding where ever they can. I’ll be doing something around the house, then move something, and under that is another project. They keep multiplying!

With that, I’m off to knit before heading to work.

Until next time, make it a great knitting day!

I meant to add that the first picture with the darker colors looks 3D and very cool!
